How foreigners register and get seen at a Beijing hospital
Updated: 2026-10
A non-emergency visit is a passport, a registration window, and a queue. Hospital Day escorts and translates for a $320 service fee. It is not medical care, and it does not promise a slot.
Call 120 for an emergency, and use this page only for a planned visit
A non-emergency visit to a Beijing public hospital is a passport, a registration (挂号), a paid slot, and a series of windows. An emergency is a different system: the ambulance number is 120, and the emergency department does not follow the appointment path below. This page is for a fever that can wait for a daytime clinic, a prescription refill, a lab a clinician already ordered, or a specialist slot you can book. It is not a treatment protocol, and it is not medical advice.
Hospital Day from First72 China is appointment coordination, same-day escort, and translation at the windows. It is not medical care. We do not diagnose, we do not choose a test, and we do not promise that a department will see you. Registration fees and clinical charges are billed at actual cost when the hospital charges them. They are not inside the service fee. The clinician decides what happens in the room.
The general window and the international department are different prices
Public hospitals run a general outpatient registration and, at many large Beijing hospitals, a separate international department. The general window is the cheaper queue. A registration there is often a two-digit yuan fee. An international-department consultation is commonly several hundred yuan and can pass ¥1,000 before any test. Those are typical ranges visitors meet, not a tariff. The hospital’s price list is the charge. The international desk is more used to passports. The general window is more used to a Chinese ID card, and it still registers a passport when the clerk knows the flow.
Popular specialists fill days ahead. Same-day general registration, when it exists, usually means being at the window near opening. Many public hospitals open that window around 7:00–8:00. The hospital’s own page is the clock, and a blog’s “arrive at dawn” line is not a booking. First72 China can contact an international desk or a partner window and ask for a slot. A slot that is already full stays full. We do not hold inventory, and we do not guarantee a time.
Bring the passport booklet, a payment code, and half a day
The registration desk scans or records the passport. Bring the booklet, not a photo on a lock screen, and keep the visa or entry page ready because some desks ask for it. A working Alipay or WeChat Pay code pays many windows. Some still want the hospital’s own payment screen or cash. A foreign insurance card is not direct billing unless that hospital has already confirmed it for your plan. We do not negotiate insurance disputes, and we do not represent you in a complaint against a hospital.
Arrive 30–45 minutes before a booked slot. The sequence after your number is called is stable across public hospitals: the clinician sees you, you pay for any test, you do the test, you return with the result, and you pay again at the pharmacy if there is a prescription. Each arrow in that chain is a new queue and a new charge. Budget half a day for a simple visit and a full day if labs are involved. A “quick hour at the hospital” is how people miss the pharmacy window at closing.
What the escort does in the room, and what the escort does not do
Translation at the window means repeating the clerk’s instructions and the clinician’s questions in plain language, and helping you answer with the history you already have: medicines, allergies, the start of the symptom, and the name of any doctor you saw at home. Write those four lines down before you go. A translator who is guessing your dose is a risk. You speak for your own history. We do not add medical opinions, and we do not tell you to skip a test or to demand one.
Inpatient stays, surgery dates, and a companion for an admission are outside a one-day escort. Ask for those as a separate request if you need them. Hospital charges you pay that day, including anything advanced at a window and repaid afterward, are billed at the actual amount. The service fee covers the coordination, the escort, and the translation. No outcome is guaranteed, including a diagnosis you hoped for or a medicine you hoped to receive.
A workable order for a weekday non-emergency visit
Pick the hospital and the department the day before, using the hospital’s own booking page or a phone call to the international desk, and write the Chinese name of the hospital in the phone. Eat before you go. Morning slots are the ones that still exist. Pay the registration fee first. Sit until the number is called. After the consult, do not leave the building until you know whether there is a test, a return visit the same day, or a pharmacy stop. Each of those closes on its own schedule.
Payment-app setup belongs before this day, not in the pharmacy line. If the foreign card is not verified yet, carry cash in the thousands of yuan only if you already know the department’s range, and ask the desk which windows take cash. A ¥50 registration and a ¥600 international consult are different problems from a scan that costs several thousand. The hospital prints the number. We read it with you. We do not discount it.
Keep every receipt from the day in one envelope: registration, tests, and pharmacy. Photograph them before you leave, because a payment-app confirmation is not always the hospital’s fiscal receipt. Ask the window for that receipt if an insurer will want it later. Claims stay between you and the insurer. The envelopes are also how you check that a charge matches the price list you were shown.
FAQ
Can I walk into a Beijing hospital without an appointment?
Sometimes, at a general registration window early in the day, and not as a plan. Specialists often have no same-day slot. The international department may offer a time and may also be full. Call 120 if the problem cannot wait for a window.
What does the registration fee cost?
A general public registration is often a two-digit yuan amount. An international-department consultation is commonly several hundred yuan and can pass ¥1,000 before tests. The hospital’s price list is the charge. It is not included in the Hospital Day service fee.
Will the hospital see me with a foreign passport?
Yes at hospitals that register foreign guests, which is the normal public-hospital flow. Bring the booklet. Some desks also ask for the visa or entry page. A photo on the phone is not the document they scan. A slot is still not guaranteed.
Does First72 China provide medical care?
No. Hospital Day is appointment coordination, escort, and translation. We do not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and we do not promise an outcome. Registration and clinical charges are separate, not guaranteed, and billed at actual cost.
Can you bill my travel insurance directly?
No. Direct billing exists only when that hospital and that insurer already have it, and we do not run those talks. You pay the hospital. Keep the receipts. Insurance claims are between you and the insurer.
